Default P-38 Lightning Brotherhood

Welcome to the P-38Lightning Brotherhood

The P-38 has always been one of the most impressive, elusive, and challenging planes to model. I say impressive for obvious reasons, elusive as you don’t see to many, and when you do everyone stops to watch, and challenging because while it is a great plane to fly when everything is working correctly, they can be very unforgiving, and a bear if you loose an engine

I would like to start a group for the discussion of all things related to the P-38. Open to everything from small electrics, to the biggest gassers. Kits, ARF's or scratchbuild, gas, nitro, or electric, all are welcome. If your plane is complete, please share pictures, a give a brief description of your plane(s). If you’re still building, repairing, owned one in the past, or are flying one on a regular basis, please share your experiences, and don't forget, we all like pictures

To join please PM me, or post that would like to join, and you will be assigned a number. I will do my best to maintain the list in posting #2 and keep it up to date on a regular basis.

Lets keep it light hearted, informative, and fun

Welcome Aboard!

Please count me in! Here's a pic of my P-38, built from the Jim Ryan plan/kit. One of the best flying models I've ever owned, it's now at least 12 years old. 42" span and electric power, two motors, two ESC's and one battery.

Please sign me up, I had an 80" one (I don't remember the mfg but it was a good flyer) which I sold. I currently have a flyzone ( great little flyer) and long for a Yellow or Ziroli.

Meschmidt, awesome, and welcome

Almost bought one of those, wish I had.
I'm currently working on rebuilding a "rekitted" Yellow P-38, my first "big" P-38. Previous owner lost it on the maiden when one of the DA50s died. It will be an electric conversion, target weight is 30-32#, 5400-6000 watts, and 125 MPH straight and level. Hopefully it will happen this coming summer

BTW, your #6

That is an impressive hanger!
Don't hear of too many running nitro, what does your YA 38 weigh? Did you need weight in the nose?

70 RAGTOP,
Please add me to the list. I have a Ziroli P 38 on the table partially done. It has to wait while I complete my first jet build and finish glassing my Meister P 47.
Thanks,
Sam

Rick, you're number 12...welcome

Phantom pty
I spoke with KMP at the 2012 WRAM show about another P-38, and they mentioned they were working on a 100" version, but haven't heard anymore. Every once and a while a KMP model comes up for sale. They are semi scale, but good fliers, and look good in the air.
Don't see too many VQ's come up for sale
Royal kits every now and then.
There is a 90" balsa built up ARF that you can still find around. I know of one sitting in my LHS, and there was one on EBay now http://www.ebay.com/itm/Giant-Scale-...item3a89858e9c . Again, it is semi scale, there are a few build/mod threads on the plane
There is also a 52" version, balsa build up ARF, semi scale again, but these are available right here on RCU http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/item.cfm?itemId=952395 or on ebay
G&L hobbies makes a kit http://www.glhobbies.com/P38_Lighting/p38lighting.html
G&P makes a kit http://www.rcairplane.net/index8.html
Vic RC made a kit, although I'm not sure if it is still avalible, there is one listed in the classified section, link is to Vic's site http://www.vicrc.com/products_p38.htm
Yellow Aircraft is a great kit that builds fast. http://www.yellowaircraft.com/props/p38.htm
Ziroli is an also a great plane, but it is a big build. There are several kit cutters that can supply a kit, foam wings are available if you want to go that route, glass booms, ect http://www.ziroliplans.com/ziroliplans/p38-doss.html

There are a bunch of foamies out there which fly good, look great in the air, and are a blast to just pull out of the trunk and fly anywhere.

That must be the same one KMP was talking about, was wondering if that would be ESM, or ?? I like the ESM stuff, cheap, looks good, flys good, hardware/retracts, not so good, but for the price, they really are a great starting point
Hope they do it right!
