It also seems obvious to me that the number of holes and their diameters have an impact on their efficiency. One single tiny hole vs. one very big hole won't yield the same results... You could...

No, I would say this is a wrong assumption. A drilled air brake will generate heavy vortices right behind the plate, thus making airflow attachment more difficult, and therefore hapening further....

Do you use plain plank speedbrakes or did you drill holes into them ? These holes, as you may know, dramatically increase speedbrake efficiency... May worth a try.
