I am about to start the assembly of mine(yeah, I'm slow). Any late follow-ups on the rudder/elevator linkage slop, and the cowl mounting system? Thanks in advance!

Am now at the point of what to do with the gear doors. Can't say as I like the circular plates very much but they do serve a purpose. I am looking for ideas on a simple method of keeping the doors open when the gear is down. For closing them, I envision something like a simple drawstring that is caught by the retracting wheel that will pull the doors closed.

Simple, and reliable is my goal. Any pictures, even of installations on other designs would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi,

Anyone know what the best match Testor's paint for the TF flat Monokote on this bird?

What kind of retract system are you using Earl Aune tail wheel?
air or servo?
If servo, which one?

I'm starting to work on the cowl. Does anybody have a picture of a cowl with the cutouts already made? It sure looks like a lot of the bottom will be going away. Thanks in advance.

I was digging through all my pics and I don't think I ever took one of the bottom of the cowl cut out. This one was the only pic I had if you can increase the size. Don't try and cut it out nice and tight to the cylinder head. Give it some breathing room especially around the muffler. I think I've got at least a 1/4" clearance around it all. I can try to take a better pic later tonight if I get down in the shop storage area.

Here ya go. Be sure to cut out the dummy engine as shown for air flow to the cylinder head. This plane has a G-62 in it . It all fits in the cowl except for the spark plug boot.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to post those photos!. As I suspected, there isn't much left of the bottom of the cowl. I'm setting mine up with an EME 60 so there won't be much left on mine as well.

Again, thanks.

Warbirdman,

If I can pester you just a little bit more? What is the approximate distance from the edge of the inside lip of the cowl to the aluminum pushrod tubes? "Ballpark" is good enough.

Thank you!

Not a problem. I have roughly a 1/2". But that can vary a bit depending on how you mount your engine, cowl, where the prop hub sticks out, clearance between the engine and dummy engine, etc, etc.

All true, but it does give me an approximate reference point. My gratitude for your help...again!

Bye the way, keep the date of July 30th available. My club will sponsor "Warbirds over Missouri" for the 3rd year. Free lunch, a great field and some really great warbird pilots from the midwest. It's a long drive, but well worth it.

Mine needed 2.2 pounds of ballast to achieve it's balance point. I used a heavier engine and moved everything I could to the front. Canopy was glued on 2 days ago and decals are starting to go on. Getting close. Should be able top test-run the engine next week.

Test ran the engine today (EME 60). Got 6,000 on a wood 24x10, 6,200 on a Mejzlik 22x10x3, and 5,900 on a Beila 20x10x4. Will test fly soon with the cheaper 24x10 wood prop. Balanced about 1/8th inch ahead of the rearmost recommended point, which is how I like it.

Don't have a scale, but it seems to weigh the same as the Top Flite giant P-40 arf.

One question, are you guys using any blue loctite on the wing socket-head bolts used to mount the outer wing panels?

Thanks!

I need a copy of the fuselage plans for this bird if anybody has a set they no longer need. Shoot me an email and we can work out the details. TIA!

Chad,

Do you mean the assembly manual? There are no plans with this ARF.

Absolutely use "Blue" loctite on the socket head wing bolts. If you don't the vibration can loosen them up and they will fall out.
I've already lost one or two already because I didn't freshen them up once in awhile.
