Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along
#1376
"I think" (I hope?). That's the trouble with re-builds. There's always that nagging thought in the back of your mind, "Did I find everything? Did I miss anything?" My approach to a situation such as this is to keep that first shake-down flight to just a few minutes, long enough for basic trimming, then get that sucker back on the ground for a complete nose-to-tail post-flight inspection back at the shop. Of course, I'll have something else with me to fill out the rest of the day.
Personally, I could never even come close to something like this. Glad there are fellas like you who can, so I get to admire them from a spectator's point of view. Keep up the good work, Art!

Model airplanes are never finished, really. At some point, you just stop working on them.

Thanks Rick.
I went through the fuselage pretty thoroughly and since I didn't build it I am not totally familiar with it yet. There were a lot of fasteners and pieces and parts that I removed to make that inspection and sometimes maybe a scale piece or part is misplaced or put back into the model out of order - so far it looks good. If I go with the mentality that it's done, completely finished then I subconsciously quit looking....on the other hand, if I "think" that it is finished, then I usually stay alert to possible problems that might arise.
And you can be assured that after she is re-maidened there will be a good going over before the next flight is made.

Progress Report:
It had to be done - I tore into the bottom of the top wing........servos are serviceable.......damage has been exposed around the right top cabane mount.....lots of internal wiring exposed, some of which will have to be replaced and some which will need to be made more manageable.......then there will be the repair to the covering (at least it is on the bottom of the wing)

All the servo leads have been checked, switch checked out, battery installed, servo throws and direction set and functioning. The receiver is also installed. I think all the damage has been identified and all but the cabane mount blocks have been repaired. This has been challenging but going smoother than I thought it might.
The ever present list of items to be completed has been written. This list gets longer as I check off each item.

Hey, Art. Funny how that happens. I'll check off a few items, only to add several more. Sometimes, I'll start a whole new list!
Glad to see the progress moving along nicely. I know she's in good hands.
Well, I'm in the middle of masking my Rascal for paint. I like the simple things. See ya!

The bottom wing was given a cleaning and inspection and found to be in sound condition.
The Top and Mid wings had their respective parts and pieces re-attached and then re-assembled - ready for storage, transport or flight.
Lee, the GTM Prototype is deemed air worthy. All it needs now is the engine to be installed and test run - and then it's re-maiden time.

Sweet. I am ready to travel to the flying site of your choice to fly with, give ground assistance, be a spotter, shoot video/pictures, or anything else that you want. But I agree that warmer weather would be nice. I saw in the last "All done" picture a white stripe on the top wing. Something that was part of the full size paint job, or just an area that needs a dab of paint? A nice job of rebuilding. The first owner would be very happy with your work. I think a dawn patrol with hundreds of DRI's in the air flying high cover would be really great. OK, perhaps a few less than a hundred.

Thanks jeffEE. I'll try to let the world know when the re-maiden will occur with a post here on this thread. The small lite colored stripe on the top wing is where the wing sheeting broke when the wing mount was broken loose. The sheeting joins there and that joint was broken all the way around the wing (top and bottom). Yes, it certainly does need a dab of paint .....
Hey, maybe we could reenact the New Zealand flight with 7 DR1s - that would be a hoot!

Del's old engine, a GT 80 with CH electronic ignition was re-installed. I dug out an old 1400 mah NiCad from my stash of stuff, charged and cycled it a couple of times and then hooked it into the system. Took the plane outside, added a bit of fuel and it fired right up. Ran just fine! I didn't touch the needle settings, but it might need retuned when flying season gets here - big difference from winter cold to spring/summer heat and humidity. I took some video and will see if I can post it here. If not, y'all will have to take my word for it.
Del's DR1 is ready to take to the skies again.......probably in May just before the Mint Julep Scale Classic.
Cheers and I'll see you at the field!

Hi Rich
On my old BUSA DR1/GT80 combination, I used a 28 x 6 Xoar Axial laminated prop. It was absolutely the best combination of airframe to power to how I like to fly. I have never flown a big pup with a GT80 so I don't have any first hand experiences to tell you about. I flew my last third scale pup with a G62 and used a 24 x 10 prop. An older pup that my Dad and I flew years ago had a 3.7 cu in Sachs and it also used a 24 x 10 prop. I experimented with other prop sizes, but always came back to the 24 x 10. Zingers, PK, Menz and other props were used with some being superior to others (pilots choice kind of thing). Greg Emerick (a charter member of the Dawn Patrol) flies his 1/3 pup/GT80 with a 24 x 10 and is very satisfied with the performance for the past several years.
If you could only pick one prop I would choose a 24 x 10. But if you have a couple of other props available, it would be nice to experiment with other sizes.....maybe a 26 x 8, 26 x 10, 28 x 6 or 28 x 8. I think the engine would run well with all of these props but would play out the power to the airframe differently. That is where the pilot expectations of how he wants the model to perform comes into play. You pick what best fits your style of flying.
Cheers and Happy New Year,
Art

The re-maiden of Von Delby's GTM DR1 will be the weekend of May 11, 12, 13 at the Dawn Patrol of Madison County, Indiana. The link above should take you to the Facebook page where the flyer is posted. This will be my first flying session of the year and I am looking forward to it. Feel free to come out and kibitz - I enjoy all the ribbing and comradery.
Apparently I cannot post a link to Facebook here ...... go to the Facebook page RC Dawn Patrol and you should be able to find the info - if not just ask.

Well I have requested, begged, pleaded, stomped my feet, and threatened to hold my breath until I turn blue. But I still can't get this weekend off. I wish you fair winds straight down the runway for this event and the re-maiden of the DRI. Of course, any pictures would be great. Enjoy the day.

It might be Memorial Day weekend at the IOK in Cincinnati, Ohio, weather dependent of course. I plan to take my half scale N-11 but if the weather forecast has storms moving through during the event, then I will take a smaller model which would be much easier to protect from inclement weather. Time will tell...….

Hear Ye, Hear Ye.
The re-maiden will this coming weekend (Memorial Day weekend) at the IOK Dawn Patrol in North Bend, Ohio. Look on Facebook on the Hoosier Dawn Patrol or the RC Dawn Patrol pages for the flyer - the where & when are on the flyer. Tony Gronas or Paul Wylie are the contacts for the event. They can also be found on Facebook.
Thursday is the probably day of the re-maiden flight.
