in the manual, for flaps, it says 100mm for Elevons. I dont think that is correct? Seems too much for lateral movement!

Thanks
I don't have the SM jet anymore so I can't measure anything. I do remember I reduced the flap travel to about 1/2" on TO and Landing to help reduce the pitch sensitivity I was experienceing. I think I posted what my throws were somewhere on this or the other F-16 build thread. It may still be there.

I never had any issues with my LEF system. I could not tell if they made much difference or not.

My intermitent gear issues turned out to be a bad crimp on one of the wires to the Jetronics main gear air valve.

Hey Spencer. I just told ARA via PM I will measure my settings and report back soon. Regarding the gear lock, what I did to keep it simple was Y lead the gear up and unlock but make the unlocking airline as short as it can be and lengthen the gear up airline. This creates a small delay between unlock and gear up and should allow normal operation. As Gary said the there is no issue with the LEF set up. In fact it’s really solid and has a built in mechanical failsafe. I use LEF and flaperon for TO and landing.

Cheers
Levi

Guys sorry for delay, here are my settings:
Rudder- 25mm each way (measured bottom of fin)
Aileron- 20mm up, 15mm down (measured wingtip end)
LEF- as much as you can on landing, half that on TO
Flaperon- 20mm (measured next to fuse) for landing, half that for TO
Elevator- 60mm up
CG 260 from wing LE next to fuse empty LG down
IGyro SRS about 35% on everything dampening mode only
My bird is heavy at 27kg dry but flies awesome. My settings are not necessarily correct but after experimenting with different settings they work best for me.
Cheers
Levi

27 kg dry ???????
the Scale jets 1/5 weighs 20kg dry ..
the BVM PNP about 21.5-22.5 KG

Why is your Viper 27KG? Any special features you added ?

Lavi I do have a lot of gear in there. P300 is heavy, anamatronic pilot, lights, burner ring, smoke tanks, Jetcat E10 smoke pump, Itraps for fuel and smoke, Powerbox batteries etc. Plus the SM F16 itself is much heavier than BVM, landing gear is bigger and heavier.

we got all that in our 1/5th PNP’s . Jet cat 300’s etc still 22.5 kg ..
same size wheels these are 1/5 th all dimensions are about the same with slight deviations .. we talk about 5kg difference it’s a lot 25% !

And compared to the one from scale jets again 1:5 it’s 33% !

Wow !

Yes but the BVM LG is very skinny and basic looking. SM much more robust and scale. There’s a scale jets F16 here that’s 26 dry too. Depends on set up I guess.

Also the SM is about 5% bigger than scale jets, even though they say both are 1/5. I’ve had them both in my workshop at once. I was painting both together. I’ll try to dig up some comparison photos I took.

I see ,
all the ones I judged at the Jwm where loaded with all scale options , scale canopy , some had drouge chute on , lights , extremely detailed wheel bays , cockpits etc . All up weight was under 20kg each and there where 6 F-16 from different competitors .

Good oof luck with yours

Hey Levi,

do do you think a 250 or 260 would fly her well or do you need the extra thrust?

Cool Lavi. Yes I’ve seen some scaled up JWM 16s come out light. I think there’s even a large SM one competing but LG looks modified. If you find out the secret to weight saving let me know 😂. I always try to build light but this ones a porker.

Craig a 250-260 would be fine mate. I could strip out smoke system and switch to a 260 and save lots of weight and have a machine that’s easier to land. It’s fun going vertical with the 300 though.

i personally know Marjin ( producer of the Scale jet F-16) and I can tell you right there . His F-16 including his landing gear ( 100% scale accuracy) built following his instructions come out UNDER 20Kg ...
wow ..
including functioning canopy , dive brake, lighting , flaperons , Le flap, stabilizer, rudder, smoke , AFB ring . And it flies with a 180 size turbine .

Mate I’m not disagreeing with you. I’ve had both jets in front of me at once and I’ve painted both sets of gear so I have a better comparison than most. The SM is what it is and I’m happy with it. Just posting my settings to help others so I’m not sure how this has turned into a pissing contest.

Thanks for your setup Levi.
would anyone mind posting some pics of the gear door mounting locations/template/proper geometry? Nothing is shown in the manual version I have so perhaps someone has it figured out.

also what psi seems to be best in the struts/ tires?

Lastly my nw steering is pretty stiff and there is some slop. is this normal?

Default Thrust tube

anyone running the smaller skymaster pipe successfully with a 320? Is this doable or bad idea? If I go with the bigger pipe my afterburner ring won't fit😢

According to jetcats table the same pipe size (100mm dia) serves engines from 180-300N...

Hi Spencer,
I chose not to do it because the guidance in the B300F manual recommended a pipe of 130mm inlet and 110mm exhaust. I used the stock SM 300N pipe in mine and had no issues. I could not use the AB ring because of the big pipe.

I do not have any knowledge on the subject except form my experience. I have flown 3 jets now with 300-320N class turbines and all had the bigger pipes with no issues. I did talk to some folks who had problems with the stock pipe in the BVM/JL 1/5 F-16 pipe using the bigger turbines, but it was small and not very good quality IMO.

I never had that specific problem with either of my 1/5 F-16 but I did have some slow doors on both. I flew both with the B300F with no by pass. The fix in both cases was to inject BVM lube oil into all the cylinders on both sides. I think there was blow by in some of the cylinders and a good dose of the silicon oil fixed it. Good luck. Post pictures of your jet.

Default Gear doors

Nickelup,
ive heard of issues using the stock (skymaster) cylinders. I bought UP cylinders and my doors operate beautifully with a k320 and no bypass. The 320 only has a an inch or two from the rear part of the intake duct so it’s a straight shot for the intake air.

i just maidened mine a week ago and couldn’t be happier with it. Cortex and a k320 is a mean combo for true scale performance!

hi. Can you please share your surface setup? I want to maiden mine and I was hoping to hear from someone that has flown theirs. How did you setup your elevators and ailerons? Throws?

Thanks

I’m still dialing mine in, but I have 5 flight modes...
1. Gear up or down no flaps
2. Gear down takeoff flaps(no slats) with tailerons added in with ailerons
3. Gear down full flaps and full slats w tailerons
4. Gear up snap slat (mix ele>slats) like full scale
5. Gear up slats down full for high alpha passes (w tailerons)

as as I get it better dialed in I will share my throws but im still playing with what flight mode mixing I like, at this point I am considering mixing tailerons to ailerons in all modes as does the full scale. Next thing to keep in mind is I mix the flaps with the gear switch- like the full scale. The full scale does not deploy the flaps with the gear up. In fact, the pilot has no flap lever- they are slaved to the gear handle just like in my radio setup. I will say my F-16 behaves more like the full scale than any other model I have seen fly. Granted that is my intention In my flying style but my radio setup also definitely adds to the realism.

Spencer,
Nice photos!
What is your jets empty weight with the K-320? I just put one in mine after my B300F failed.

I also use full time roll mix to differential stabs. It hurts nothing that I can see and It really helps in high AOA slow flight when making roll inputs. I think it is also very effective when making roll inputs during the final turn and final approach.
I just used leading edge flaps (LEF) and flaperons together since there was no way to program the LEFs to work like the full scale with AOA. I figured if I wanted max lift I just put the both down so they are both down for take off and landing. On the full scale the LEFs don't go down until you rotate.
I do not have 2 positions for flaperons, they are just up or down like the full scale.
Keep posting photos! Great looking jet!
Gary
